Q: Why is my Check Engine light is flashing?
A: The engine computer is seeing a system fault (now) that is causing high tail pipe emissions. When the light is flashing, you are causing damage to the Catalytic Converter. If your check engine light is flashing, do not drive the car. The cost of a damaged catalytic converter could be as high as $1,600.00 on most 4 cylinder cars. Double that for a V8 engine.
Why risk it, tow the car in to the shop. Playing it safe will save you money.
A quality repair facility will offer you free towing to the shop as long as you do the repairs on the same visit. I know we do that at the shop I work for.
